James E. West was the first Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America. He served in that position for more than three decades. The West Fellowship award is bestowed on individuals for gifts of $1,000 and up in cash or marketable securities to our Council Endowment Fund. The gift must be in addition to and not replace or diminish the donor's annual Friends of Scouting support.
Attention, Scouts of all ages! An opportunity like no other is fast approaching. This falls, Scouts from far and wide will descend upon the Rendezvous campgrounds, and you should plan to be a part of it!
So what is "Rendezvous?" Our Great Rendezvous will hearken back to the original rendezvous, which were gatherings of mountain men, fur-trappers, frontiersman, and traders. Yet it's also so much more! Adventurers and explorers pushed the limits of courage and endurance as they settled the American wilderness.
In this spirit, Scouts from the Northwest Texas Council and neighboring councils, will gather at our encampment to encounter exciting opportunities to challenge their own limits, to conquer their own horizons.
Day camp is an organized one- to five-day program for Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts conducted by the district. Day camps are conducted during daylight or early evening hours. Day camps do not include any overnight activities.
Boy Scout Camp: Scouts will be given the opportunity to work on various merit badges - Archeology, Archery, Aviation, Backpacking, Bird Study, Canoeing, Cycling, Environmental Science, Farm Mechanics, First Aid, Fish & Wildlife Management, Geocaching, Golf, Lifesaving, Mammal Study, Nature, Personal Fitness, Photography, Pioneering, Radio, Reptile Study, Rifle Shooting, Scuba, Shotgun Shooting, Soil & Water Conservation, Surveying, and, of course, Swimming!Completion of any advancement requirements is not guaranteed.
A quality Scouting experience will help keep Scouts in the program, and the Boy Scouts of America created the Unit Leader Award of Merit to recognize the quality unit leaders who make that happen.
The Unit Leader Award of Merit replaces the Scoutmaster, Varsity Team Coach, and Venturing Crew Advisor award of merit programs. This new recognition has revised requirements and may be earned by Cubmasters as well. There will be a new knot to replace the existing one given to Scoutmaster and Advisor Award of Merit recipients.
In February 2010, the Boy Scouts of America will celebrate 100 years as an organization. Founded as an outlet to prepare every eligible youth in America to become a participating citizen and leader, BSA has more than fulfilled its mission. Today, as we celebrate our first 100 years, we not on only reflect on our rich history, but lay the foundation for a strong future, as well.

Again it's hard to believe that we are in the last half of February. This month we have seen the Report to State, Merit Badge College, and this Friday the Auction. At last Saturday's merit badge college there were at least 185 scouts, 100 who showed up that morning, thanks to chairman Blaney Eathorn, he made it work. I had several great visits with scout leaders and other volunteers from the community.
This Friday we will hold our Auction, please make plans to attend today, the team has put together a wonderful program, now we need more people to show up and bid.
As always, the spring will be packed with activities: March will kick it off with a Council Pinewood Derby then in April we will have the Rendezvous, Conclave, OA Ordeal, and in May the Scout O Rama, and Cub N Pal.
Don't forget to recharter in April, thanks to Shari this process is now online.

The Scout Shop is the in-house store that helps supply the scouts and scouters of the Northwest Texas Council. It's the place to go for all your uniform and camping needs! Our 700 sqft Scout Shop carries a large stock of Scouting uniforms, books, phamplets, and forms and maintains an inventory that reflects the most recent changes in the Scouting program.
Friends of Scouting is the annual campaign where the Northwest Texas Council asks Scouting families, businesses and civic-minded citizens to support our mission of providing the Scouting program to thousands of young people in the 12 counties served by our council.
Due to the elimination of funding from the North Texas Area United Way, all commitments made this year will make a big difference in our success in 2009.
